За този проект исках да направя плавен преход от румънските ризи към българските. Най-подходящи за това са ризите от русенска област, поради близостта й със северната ни съседка. Ето няколко прекрасни образци от Русе, които използвах за вдъхновение. Сами ще видите приликите с румънските ризи, особено с тези от района Влашка около Гюргево.
For my next project I wanted to make a smooth transition from Romanian to Bulgarian blouses. The most suitable region for such a move is Rousse due to its proximity to our northern country neighbour. Here are some wonderful examples from this area in northeast Bulgaria which I used for inspiration. You can see the resemblance with the Romanian shirts, especially from the Vlașca county around Giurgiu.
Ризата, която уших, не е автентично копие на някакъв оригинал. Въпреки, че уважавам и се възхищавам на труда на хората, които правят точни копия на фолклорни облекла, аз лично исках да ушия дреха, която да нося във всекидневието. Затова се опитах да я преобразя така, че да е подходяща за обличане тук и сега, а не само по фестивали и фолклорни събития.
Макар осъвременена, исках ризата да носи основните белези на русенска риза: кройката, богато бродираните предна част и раменна алтица, украсата от пайети (по русенски – лютурки), прилепнали, набръчкани ръкави от по-лека тъкан. Това са най-общо елементите, които исках да запазя. Какво промених? Избрах ризата да има природен мотив от Добруджа с жито и синя метличина, това определи цветовете: тъмно жълто и синьо (въпреки че доминира, червеното не е единственият цвят в русенските ризи, има оранжеви, дори сини). Бродерията също измислих сама, като се старах да прилича възможно най-много на житни класове и метличини.
The shirt that I sewed was not an authentic copy of an original. Although I respect and admire the effort of the artisans who make copies of ethno attire, I personally wanted to make a shirt that can be worn daily. Therefore I tried to create it in a way that would allow me to ware it in everyday life, and not only at festivals or other folk events.
Despite its modern look, I however wanted the shirt to be recognisable as originating from the Rousse region: the cut is authentic, the lavishly embroidered front and shoulder parts also, the embellishment with sequins, and the sleeves which are made from a lighter wrinkled material. Those were the elements which I kept from the original folk shirts. What I changed was: the embroidery pattern is actually based on motives from nature – the wheat and cornflowers that are typical for the region. This choice also determined the colours – dark yellow and blue. These colours are not unusual, the dominant colours in Rousse shirts is the red in all its variants, but I have seen orange and even blue. The stitches are also my creation, with the intention to get the form and relief of wheat and cornflower.

Материалите, които използвах са:
- бял ленен плат за основна материя, мисля, че беше 16 каунт
- нежен плат 50% коприна, 50% памук за ръкавите (номер 1 на снимката, от Fabrix.RO)
- жълтият плътен конец е 54% вълна и 46% коприна (от Ателие Цитрон)
- синият е чиста коприна (също от Ателие Цитрон)
The materials that I used were as follows:
- white linen for the main body, 16 cnt
- light material for the sleeves 50% silk, 50% cotton (number 1 in the photo, from Fabrix.RO)
- the yellow thick thread is 54% wool and 46% silk (from Atelier Zitron)
- the blue thin thread is pure silk (also from Atelier Zitron)

I sewed the front part first and then the shoulder parts.
После шевицата в горния край на ръкавите. Долния край украсих със шита дантела кене. Няма много източници в интернет за това как се шие българско кене. Аз ползвах книгата на Мария Колева “Българска шита дантела” и някои видеа на туркини в YouTube (турската шита дантела се нарича oya).
Then I sewed the embroidery that is at the top of the sleeves. The end of the sleeves I garnished with needlepoint lace (called “kene” in Bulgarian). There are not a lot of information sources about how to sеw kene, I used the book of Maria Koleva “Bulgarian needlepoint lace” and also some YouTube videos of Turkish artisans (in Turkish this type of lace is called “oya”).
Яката на русенските ризи се прави чрез набръчкване, затова този тип ризи също се наричат “бръчанки” и са характерни за северна България.
The part around the neck is done by gathering. This is very typical for most of the northern regions in Bulgaria.
